Editors’ Note
To celebrate the changing of the seasons and observe the shortening of the days (at least in the northern hemisphere where COOP HQ is located), we are excited to present our twelfth issue. COOP has reached a full dozen eggs, and this one is a particularly broody one.
Zine #12 is full of the deep emotions chickens evoke in us. We often feel sadness and regret when their lives end, either from sickness or for the purposes of providing dinner for the table, such as in “Solitary Shade” or “Water Belly”. We feel rebellious and free when we watch them strut around, perhaps in places they shouldn’t be, as seen in “Rock n Roll Chicken” or “Contraband.” They make us consider aspects of ourselves, from our gender (“self-educate” and “Prize Capon”) to our own mortality (“Staying Alive.”) They represent fear (“Hawks Overhead”), frustration (“The Rooster Next Door”), and a sense of home, warmth, and belonging (“On chicken and graduation.”) We hope this zine will send you on a journey that makes you think and feel something new. We hope it will be the perfect companion to you during this time of changing seasons.
