Why did the chicken cross the street?

by Alex

“Why did the chicken cross the street?”
After decades of asking, it told me,
“The farther worm is much more sweet.”

Determined to not end up as meat
The butcher pursued, so it had to flee—
And that’s why the chicken crossed the street.

Tired of pecking at seeds and wheat,
Its heart longing to sail the foreign seas—
After all, the farther worm is much more sweet.

Escape had seemed an impossible feat,
but now it struts, proud and free.
It’s happy, having crossed the street.

Of course, it could be run over in a heartbeat,
But it won’t die in vain, becoming a feathery
Legend who tasted the worm—oh, so sweet!

Dreams tide over the scorching heat;
Each little struggle has its reason to be.
You ask why the chicken crossed the street—
Because worms of labor are incredibly sweet.
