In the stillness of the night when all things move
Critters and coyotes scatter dust to their scents
And the cattle sleep and rest their hooves
The rooster restless in its wake sang no dirge of its escape
Under the moonlight and through ocotillo laden fence
The bird trod forward with everything to lose
And now beyond the hands of those whose eyes are now spent
It follows the cascades of subtle light in the great western windfalls
From day and night it continues its trek through palo verde grooves
Bore witness to an ever changing world beyond the coop tenants
No longer living as complacent nor given, the rooster’s muse
Is the sunrise of life to foggy dew in pine forests, understanding the dream
A javelina shares water from a pond, knowing of life’s defiance
A pecking order’s dictation to the bird now knows what it loses
Rattlesnakes will hiss, lightning will stir fires across the sky indiscriminate
The rooster stands at a bluff of the Utah verde, the condors fly by, or was it Tuscany
